In 2015, one of our founders, Nick Brown, published a story that would eventually become the seed that blossomed Effct. While teaching in Colombia on a Fulbright fellowship, Nick led his university students in a lesson on stereotypes. He presented Netflix's, Narcos, and students strongly contested the shows portrayal of their country. Brown compiled their thoughts and experiences into an article.
That article has received almost 500,000 views, been syndicated as far as Australia, and changed the conversation about stereotypes of Colombia.
The story showed Nick the power of the Internet to create social change. From there, a friend introduced him to the effective altruism (EA) movement, which aims to solve the world's biggest problems by the most economically viable means. He realized many EA organizations did great ground work, and could represent themselves better online.
So, he founded Effct.
